OIL CONTENT / MELTING POINT / PENETRATION / COLOR
ODOR / HYDRATION
In general, we distinguish solid paraffins first by the melting point and then by the oil content contained in the paraffin. Each paraffin has a certain melting point, which is given in degrees Celsius. Solid paraffins with an oil content of 3-5% to 1-3% are Semi-refined Paraffin Wax, while paraffins with an oil content of 1% -0.5% (and below) are Fully Paraffin Wax. Rafined Paraffin Wax). The lower the oil content, the higher the quality of the paraffin.
The depth of penetration is an important information when choosing paraffin. Paraffin with a higher penetration value is more flexible and easier to shape, for example, during manual modeling (cutting). In general, paraffins with a lower designation number (less than 20) are of higher quality paraffins, so the lower the number, the harder the paraffin. Paraffins with a penetration mark of 30 and higher are paraffins softer.
Last but not least, abrasion is also important for paraffin waxes. High-quality paraffins are completely odorless, a slight odor can in many cases be removed by remelting (by dissolving the paraffin in a vessel or boiler at about 60ºC).
The color of paraffin is a very important element in the selection of paraffin, and it is generally assumed that the whiter the paraffin, the better its quality. Paraffins marked with the number 30+ are bright white, on the contrary, the lower the number, the darker the paraffin. Paraffins marked with the number 25, for example, have a touch of yellow, so the lower the designation, the darker the paraffin.
It is important to know if paraffin is hydrated or not. Hydrated paraffins have a lower penetration depth and therefore a higher quality. Fully refined paraffins are often hydrated during their refining, where all impurities are mostly removed.
Suitable additive to paraffin in the production of candles
Stearin was discovered in 1818 as a suitable raw material for the production of candles. The melting range of stearin, depending on the composition of the mixture, is between 60 and 70°C. Unlike paraffin, which is a by-product of petroleum processing, stearin is made from vegetable oils or animal fats. It is biodegradable.
It is generally recommended to add stearin to paraffin mixtures in the manufacture of candles. The ratio of stearin to paraffin is usually determined by each manufacturer as needed.
1. Production of candles – in candle production, the use of stearin meant a reduction in the production of candles. Unlike paraffin, stearin is a renewable raw material, it can be assumed that its use in candle making will increase. Even today, many candles are made from a mixture of paraffin and stearin, for example in a ratio of 80:20% stearin. Stearin can create stronger and more thermally stable candles in combination with paraffin. It is therefore a suitable raw material for the production of cast and pressed candles. It is not suitable for the production of drawn candles.
2. Additive to cosmetics and medicines, especially ointment and cream products.
3. Stearin from palm oil is added to foods.
